task 2

When becoming a professional video editing freelancer, a multiple number of things have to come to a certain standard. Things such as, understanding your chosen video editing software to execute certain tasks the client wants, comprehending the different editing techniques such as Walter Murch’s ‘’rule of six’’ which includes the 180ยบ rule, rhythm, story etc…  which helps structure and make the footage look professional. Structure is one of the most important assets to have in editing; knowing when to cut the footage to the next clip (this relates to rhythm), and building a story out of the footage.

In freelance editing is not only putting clips together to make sense, there is other genres of editing such as visual effects and motion graphics. These types of editing are very hard to grasp and too perfect; there is a lot to learn and understand. To learn these genres one must attend advanced editing courses or even learn by themselves through tutorials on the internet.

I have only two years of experience in video editing and yet I’m a novice at after effects at most. There is so much to learn in that video editing software and to understand it perfectly would take a lot of time and dedication, which I’m lacking at the moment. I can navigate the program with ease but understanding all the effects and features it offers is one of my weakness and sometimes stops me from doing some ideas I think of, as I don’t know how to execute the idea. I have a good understanding in editing techniques and transition use but there is room for improvement as sometimes I do make mistakes. But also for VFX and motion graphics I will need to open up my imagination as sometimes I focus on one thing most of the time and these techniques require a lot of imaginative thought. I struggle in that department of editing, as they require a lot of knowledge of the program such as expressions and NULL Camera; which I am at a basic level of (very advanced features).

There are a wide variety of courses available to help with my knowledge of the program and its editing genres.
